Stone Veneer vs Concrete Overlay! Which one is right for walls?
Before we compare the products let’s review what they are.
Stone look Decorative concrete overlays are cement based products that have been modified with polymers and special additives to add strength and bonding ability, fit for many surfaces. Overlays can be stamped, hand carved, shaped and colored to give the realistic look of brick, stone, pavers, rock, slate, stacked stone and so much more.
Manufactured stone veneer, has many different names such as stone veneer, faux stone, lick-n-stick, artificial stone, stacked stone veneer, cultured stone, manufactured stone, and flexible stone veneer. Essentially, they are all the same. Stone veneer is mixed, poured into molds, and colored to look like stacked stone, rock, brick, etc. They are mass produced and packaged for application.
What are the differences between a Concrete Overlay and Stone Veneer?
While Stone veneer products are mass produced and have pre-set designs and colors, Vertical Concrete Overlays are customized to exactly what you want. If you look at natural stones, rock, or brick, they do not all look the same. If they all have unique shapes, sizes, and colors, why would you settle for an ordinary solution to your resurfacing needs? With a Vertical Concrete Overlay you will get a unique product, with a natural look that is designed to match your intended design and color choices.
Most of the products we are comparing are all strong and are made of enhanced or modified cement they look good and will give great strength.
The products are fairly easy to put on the wall or other vertical surfaces.
The products are lighter in weight compared to actual stone making them easier to carry and apply.
The products do not need or require any type of footer or another form of support like natural stone may need …but some may require a lath for extra strength.
How are these products applied?
Stone veneer comes in set shapes and go together like puzzle pieces. Because of this, it is very difficult to fit the veneer around obstructions on your walls. When it comes to corners, you will need to custom cut each piece or special order corner pieces which can add significant cost to the project.
More difficulties also arise when you try to make square or rectangular pieces fit around anything round or rounded. Skilled crafters can make this happen but like doing tile work, it is one piece at a time, customizing each piece to fit into the space and is very time consuming.
Vertical concrete overlay systems are mixed onsite and then applied either by hand by troweling or by using a special mortar sprayer and then shaped and formed on the wall itself so it fits perfectly around any obstruction or corner. When working with a Concrete overlay it is like using a soft modeling clay that is pliable and moldable allowing you to add intricate detail to give your surface a natural look.
Vertical and Horizontal Concrete overlayments are customizable and can actually look more realistic because they are imperfect and not the same factory look on every single brick and stone.
